When a period gets in the way of your sex life…

Let’s set the scene… I’m 16 years old and about to ‘do bits’ (as we called it back then) with my first boyfriend. It’s maybe the second or third time he’s ever gone down on me, so it still makes me a little bit nervous and I spend a lot of the time worrying that my vagina looks funny. Everything is going okay, but a few minutes in, he stops suddenly and looks up at me.

“I think you might have started your period”

Nowadays, something like that wouldn’t even phase me, but at 16 years old and still very new to sex, this was the most embarrassing thing that could ever happen to me. I shot up, wrapped myself up in my dressing gown, and ran to the bathroom, all whilst shouting “Oh my god I’m so sorry, I’m so embarrassed”.

I head to the bathroom to clean myself up and after a few minutes realise that there is no trace of my period. Slightly confused but still embarrassed I head back into the bedroom. 

I open the door and am met with my boyfriend standing in the middle of the room with his head tilted back, pinching his nose into a tissue. He looks at me very sheepishly and says, “Never mind, don’t think it was your period.” Turns out he’d had a very poorly timed nosebleed all over me, him, and his bedsheets. And he had the cheek to accuse me of being the issue.
